INTRODUCTION TO THE VOCABIJLARY.
I have here a word to say about this Vocabulary, and the manner of using it. Excepting the ten first taies which have already been translated, I have inserted in this Vocabulary ail the words in the book, and almost ail the forms in which these words appear ; so that you will find here not only what is called the infinitive, arriver for instance, which is ail that the large dictionaries contain, but also the verbal forms, , arrivait, arrivant, arrive, arriarrivent ; which will be very useful to young beginners. But as I expect that by this time you will know something of the French grammar, I have not carried this too far ; be-’cause I think you will not wish to be told every thing, but woukl rather I should leave you to find out something for yourselves. For this reason I have usually inserted only the masculine singular of substantives, adjectives, and participles, which form the féminine by adding e, and the plural by adding s ; so that if you have the word enfants, you must look for the word enfant of which it is the plural ; so the word petite must be looked for under petit, the word arrêtées under arrêté, &c. When the plural and féminine are not made in this regular manner, I have inserted ail the forms that occur in these taies. When a French word is put between parenthèses, its place is before the word
