Hello! I will check to-morrow the exact place of the capital letters in the titles of the seven books of À la recherche du temps perdu, for the time being I have this : « La présente étude a pris en considération toute l'œuvre publiée de Marcel Proust, mais les conclusions sont tirées avant tout du matériel fourni par À la recherche du temps perdu, notamment des textes qu'on peut considérer comme définitifs, c'est-à-dire Du côté de chez Swann, À l'ombre des jeunes filles en fleurs, Le Côté de Guermantes, Sodome et Gomorrhe et une partie de La Prisonnière ». Herewith a picture of Proust's writing, not for the capital letters of the titles (there aren't any titles in it) but only for you to decide where to put it :). The problem is : are these titles titles of 7 separate books or titles of 7 parts of one book ? If they are titles of books, the capital letter has the purpose of telling where to put it in a bookshop or a library : D for Du côté de chez Swann; A for À l'ombre des jeunes filles en fleurs and so on. The only letter that doesn't count in the French libraries and bookshops is « Le », « La », « Les » (this is why you have La Prisonnière with a capital P, the book will be put with other P books, not L books.). If we consider they are not 7 books but 7 parts of one book, the use of capitals might be different. --Zephyrus 4 mars 2007 à 19:32 (UTC)
