Il y a pluſieurs Zenons, comme l’on peut voir dans Diogene Laërce, qui en nomme julqu’à huit, dont les uns ont été Hiſtoriens, les autres Médecins, ou Grammairiens, & la plupart grands Philoſophes. Mais il ne nous a donné la vie que de deux, dont le plus ancien eſt l’Eleate, Inventeur de la Dialectique, & celui qui cracha ſa langue contre le Tyran Nearche. L’autre eſt le Cypriot de Citie, que nous avons choiſi entre tous tes Stoïciens, à cauſe qu’il en le fondateur de leur famille, qui reçût ſon nom des portiques où ce Philoſophe ſe plût à diſcourir publiquement dans Athènes. Il y vint par un naufrage[1], qu’il reputa depuis ſi avantageux, qu’on l’oüit ſouvent ſe louer de la faveur des vents, qui l’avoient ſi heureuſement fait échoüer dans le port de Pirée.
