La France est grande, la France est belle, la France est riche. Lorsqu’un voyageur franchit la frontière pour s’avancer au cœur du pays, il rêve une suite de vastes et plantureuses campagnes, de champs de blés, de vignes, de prés, de bois, et de rivières qui brillent entre les saules, les peupliers, les herbes folles, — ou bien, entre de larges quais de pierre de taille, au milieu d’une ville.
Pourtant, qui le croirait ? dans cette France, et au centre même des plus vieilles provinces, il y a encore des recoins sauvages qui ont conservé leur physionomie des temps gaulois, et dont les habitants paraissent moins appartenir au monde des contemporains que les créoles de nos plus lointaines colonies.
J’ai passé, l’an dernier, les vacances au fond de la Creuse, chez madame de Brances, et, assurément, avant de l’avoir expérimenté je ne me serais pas imaginé rencontrer en France un pays si primitif, si naïf dans son isolement, dans son manque de points de contact avec la civilisation moderne.
Madame de Brances a soixante ans. C’est une femme d’esprit, une femme distinguée à tous égards, une femme du monde et du meilleur monde. Depuis bien des années, déjà, elle habite seule, l’hiver comme l’été, un petit manoir si bien perdu au milieu des landes, si bien caché au milieu d’un bouquet de chênes et de sapins, qu’à cent pas on ne saurait le découvrir.
Sa vie solitaire s’écoule là, entre ses livres et les occupations multipliées d’une maîtresse de maison qui gouverne un nombreux personnel de métayers et de travailleurs. Les visites du curé de la pauvre petite paroisse voisine viennent seules apporter une diversion dans cette existence d’une régularité, d’une monotonie, d’une austérité à faire passer un frisson de terreur dans l’âme de bien des femmes qui se croient peut-être détachées du monde.

Et ces êtres privilégiés qui ont pu pénétrer dans l’asile enchanté ; qui se sont assis à l’ombre des arbres aux fruits de pourpre, aux fleurs de lumière… ceux-là ont-ils le temps de respirer les parfums, de savourer l’ambroisie ?
Je songeais aux soubresauts de ce pauvre cœur trop éprouvé… J’avais peur de l’avenir…
En passant par la Beaume, je rencontrai l’abbé Blanc, qui lisait son bréviaire, assis au soleil, dans le petit cimetière, près de la croix de granit brisée.
Apparemment qu’il pouvait alors interrompre sa lecture, car il m’adressa la parole.
Je lui fis part de mes réflexions : « Oui, lui dis-je, il existe, le bonheur sur la terre… mais peut-il durer ?
— Madame, s’il durait, me répondit le curé, qu’aurions-nous à faire du paradis ? »
