SANDITON

CHAPITRE I

Un Gentleman et une Lady voyageant de Tunbridge en direction de cette partie de la côte du Sussex qui se situe entre Hastings et Eastbourne, étant amenés pour affaires à quitter la grande route, et tenter un chemin très rustique, ont été renversés en en entamant la longue ascension, moitié roc, moitié du sable. L’accident s’est produit juste au-delà de la maison du seul Gentleman, à proximité du chemin — une maison, que leur cocher à leur requête de prendre cette direction, avait cru être nécessairement l’objet de leur demande, et avec une mine récalcitrante fut contraint de la dépasser. Il avait grogné, et haussé les épaules tellement bien, et pris en pitié et ralentis[1] ses chevaux si fortement, qu’il aurait pu être soupçonné de les avoir renverser à dessein (d’autant plus que le carrosse n’était pas celui de son maître) si la route n’était pas incontestablement devenue bien pire qu’avant, dès que les bâtiments de ladite maison furent laissés derrière — exprimant par des mimiques d’intelligence prophétique[2], qu’au-delà il n’y a pas de roues, hors les roues de charrettes qui puissent en toute sécurité continuer. La gravité de la chute a été amenuisée par leur lenteur et l’étroitesse du chemin, et le gentleman ayant grimpé au dehors et aidé son compagnon, aucun d’eux dans un premier temps ne ressenti rien de plus que d’avoir été secoué et meurtri.
