Hence I come to the conclusion that, first, two characters (as given in Professor Schlegel's copy) are an impossibility: also, that the single character which il must be is a seven, and not a ten.

Finally, I may point out that the cyclic day ting-wei cannot possibly occur except sixty days before or after a sirailar cyclic day. New ail events of very great importance are given with year, moon, and day in the Chinese histories. If any cyclic day whatsoever be narrated during that year, it will be easy for those interested to coant backwards or forwards and find out for themselves whether my remarks are justified in positive fact or not[1]).
