de Grant, après avoir annihilé l’armée du général confédéré Early, qui lui était opposée.
Le moment était venu de frapper le dernier coup. Le 1er avril, Richmond fut attaqué sur tous les points à la fois. Lee lutta héroïquement pendant deux jours ; le 8 au soir, sur une armée qui comptait à peine 70,000 hommes, il avait perdu 15,000 tués et blessés et autant de prisonniers. Le 3, il fut forcé d’évacuer la ville qu’il défendait si intrépidement depuis de longues années et avec des forces si disproportionnées. Il fut poursuivi immédiatement et avec une vigueur dont les fédéraux n’avaient pas, jusque-là, donné d’exemple. C’est en vain que le 6 avril, à Farmville, son arrière-garde, commandée par le général Ewell, soutint un combat héroïque et se sacrifia pour le salut général : Lee dut s’incliner devant la destinée. Il capitula le 9 avril et obtint les conditions les plus honorables.
La prise de Richmond et le désarmement de l’armée de Lee furent, pour la confédération du Sud, le signal d’une dissolution si rapide que le monde en fut frappé d’étonnement. Le triomphe du Nord était complet et le président Lincoln paraissait décidé à user sagement de la victoire. Malheureusement, il n'en eut pas le temps : le 14 avril, il tombait sous le revolver de Booth, tandis qu’à la même heure M. Seward, son premier ministre, l’un des hommes politiques les plus remarquables de notre époque, était très-grièvement blessé par Payne, un autre assassin. En vertu de la constitution, ce fut le vice-président de la république, M. Andrew Johnson, qui prit les rênes du gouvernement. Quelques jours après son installation, Johnston capitulait, aux mêmes conditions que Lee, et le territoire du Sud n’était plus occupé que par des fractions d’armée qui, l’une après l’autre, firent leur soumission. Le 10 mai, Jefferson Davis, ex-président de la confédération du Sud, était capturé avec sa famille et envoyé prisonnier à la forteresse Monroe.
Ainsi s’est terminée, au bout de quatre années, une guerre civile qui, par sa gravité, l’acharnement des adversaires et le sang versé, reste jusqu’ici sans égale dans l’histoire. Mais le résultat en a été immense, et l’affranchissement de toute une race d’hommes, le triomphe d’un principe aussi sacré, ne pouvaient être achetés trop cher.
Au moment où nous écrivons (1871), c’est le général Grant qui est à la tête de la république des États-Unis.
